Cluster passport: combination of practical experience and fundamental knowledge provides capabilities to develop research and industry biotechnologies, fulfll orders regarding implementation of sectoral biotechnologies, carry out expert assessments of innovations and their compliance with biosecurity requirements, which makes for effcient and timely fulfllment of social and state needs at the national level.

Why IMV NASU?

D. K. Zabolotny Institute of Microbiology and Virology of NASU is the biggest scientific center for research in the field of systematization, physiology, biochemistry and genetics of microorganisms, biotechnologies, ecology and general virology.

Two main directions of the Institute’s work are: 1) study of fundamentals of microorganisms biological activity in order to regulate it; 2) study of ecology and systematics of microorganisms and viruses, detection of new species and strains of them for development of biotechnological processes. Traditionally fundamental researches of Institute’s scientists are used for development of advanced biotechnologies for industries, agriculture, healthcare system and environmental protection.

The Institute created one of the biggest in world Ukrainian collection of microorganisms. Today the collection has more than 20,000 strains of microorganisms, which are the basis for development of industrial microbial biotechnologies. The depositary of microorganisms non-pathogenic for people and animal operates in the Institute.

Long experience in fulfillment of complex projects along with corresponding institutions for development of microbial preparations for agriculture, healthcare, food industry and environmental protection, prestigious council for defense of dissertations, post-graduate training, practical training for students in microbiology and biotechnology, Institute’s membership as a leading organization in the Association of Microbiologists of Ukraine, all allow the Institute to attract the best specialists for successful solution of food sector problems.

Cooperation with Ukrainian producers of microbial preparations and with organizations interested in implementation of advanced technologies such as agricultural and industrial enterprises and, in particular, with the Ukrainian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, create the preconditions for an efficient work of the cluster.

There are all necessary preconditions in the Institute for development of high quality and safe biopreparations such as high scientific potential, a pilot biotechnology module, two accredited laboratories – the laboratory of microbiological control for fungi insemination of technical and medical equipment and the laboratory for quality control of biological preparations, products and probiotics.

Scientific center for microbial biotechnologies operates in the Institute, this center can become main part of the infrastructure to ensure cooperation among developers of microbial products, producers and consumers.

The Institute research results that have been already implemented include probiotics with antimicrobial and immunomodulation activity for healthcare (biosporyn, subalin), veterinary (endosporyn, lactyn, veterinary subalin, bovilact); biopreparations for protecting plants from plant pathogens, for productivity increase and improvement of agriculture products quality (phytosporyn, nitrobacteryn, nitragin, ekovital, nitrogran, biomagsoya, gaupsyn); ferments for production of dietary cultured milk products (gerosan and streptosan); bacterial polysaccharides for use in food industry and agriculture (EPPA, ksampan) etc.

Why SSCIBSM?

SSCIBSM is a leading institution in the field of development, expertise, registration, re-registration and control over quality of veterinary immunobiological preparations in Ukraine. Main direction of the Institute’s activity is development and improvement of technologies for production of veterinary immunobiological preparations (vaccines, serums, diagnosticums, nutrient mediums), approbation and study of biological preparations uses in veterinary medicine in Ukraine, examination and approbation of imported immunobiological preparations prior to their registration in Ukraine, depositing, maintaining, preserving and issuing strains of microorganisms to enterprises and organizations manufacturing biological preparations for the need of veterinary medicine as well as to laboratories of veterinary medicine and to education institutions.

The structure of the Institute includes:

Section of immunobiological preparations of State pharmacology commission of veterinary medicine.
Reference laboratory of the International Epizootic Bureau on Animals Rabies.
Technical committee No149 of State Consumer Standarts “Veterinary biological preparations and means of veterinary medicine for work with them”.
National center for strains of microorganisms in Ukraine. Today the Center preserves and maintains the collection of 525 microorganism strains.
Branches of two universities departments: Department of Epizootology and Veterinary Management of Kharkiv State Zooveterinary Academy and Department of Epizootology, Pathologic Anatomy and Vascular Veterinary of Luhansk National Agrarian University.
Institute trains high qualification specialists on the post-graduate studies in the specialty 16.00.03 – veterinary microbiology, epizootology, infectious diseases and immunology.
Institute issues a bulleting “Veterinary Biotechnology” which is approved by Higher Attestation Commission as a specialized publication in the field of veterinary and biological sciences (together with IMV NASU).
